About The Municipal Theater Alberto Saavedra Pérez
The Municipal Theater "Alberto Saavedra Pérez" (also known as the Municipal Theater of La Paz) is the main theater in the city of La Paz, Bolivia. It serves as a venue for recitals, musical concerts, theatrical plays, ballet, opera, and other cultural performances. Located on Jenaro Sanjinez Street corner Indaburo in the city of La Paz, it is the oldest theater in South America, inaugurated in 1845.
The theater was constructed in 1834 during the presidency of Andrés de Santa Cruz and completed in 1845 under the presidency of José Ballivián y Segurola. Designed by architect José Nuñez del Prado, it was inspired by a theater in Venice. The inaugural event on November 18, 1845, featured the presentation of the Bolivian Coat of Arms and the National Anthem. Originally known as the National Theater, it later became the Municipal Theater when it came under the administration of the Municipality of La Paz. It was subsequently named in honor of the playwright from La Paz, Alberto Saavedra Pérez.
