I’ve been working hard here lately and now it’s time for some BBQ and Bluegrass Music! Some of my favorite bands are Rhonda Vincent and The Rage, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Dale McCoury Band, Dan Tyminski and any band that has a great mandolin picker.

We have a local BBQ place that knows how to do BBQ Right! Sometimes we go over there on Friday orSaturday night, eat some good BBQ and listen to great bluegrassmusic. The other night the band played some Ralph Stanely, Bill Monroe and Flatt and Scruggs tunes. I asked my wife to please get me a copy of the Flatt and Scruggs old TV shows for my birthday. I think she will!

Most ways of waterproofing basement walls deal with the inside and outside of the wall. During construction is the best time to make sure your basement is waterproof as a waterproof membrane can be applied to the outside of the foundation. Leaks and seepage through your basement walls could result from poor original work, the home settling, or hydrostatic pressure from changes in the water table around your home. It is possible to waterproof your basement walls with some work.

Any hairline cracks, holes, or other porous areas in them should be identified. Larger holes will need to be filled with mortar and then waterproofed but smaller holes and cracks will be fine with just a waterproof mix. Chisel out a dovetail when filling in larger holes as this will allow the mortar to properly take hold from the inside. Mortar is on average one part cement to two parts sand with enough water to make a stiff mix.

Make sure there are no air holes or pockets and use an ordinary trowel when applying mortar. Get rid of loose particles with a stiff wire brush before applying the mortar as this will help it adhere, and, if the wall is leaking considerably you may need to put in a drainage pipe to a sub pump to help drain the water. This arrangement may be temporary or permanent according to the nature of the water flow. In much the same way as you would repair the larger holes in the wall, tackle the leaking floor joints.

Help it adhere by chiseling out a dovetail joint and make sure to incline the patch slanting it from the floor to the wall to provide strength and drainage. The waterproof mixture can be applied once the wall has been repaired. The mixture does not adhere to a dry wall, but will not set on a wet wall either so remove any paint and mist the wall before applying it. The manufacturer’s instructions should be read carefully since epoxy and latex waterproofing mixtures usually require you to add some water, but you could also use your own mix of plain cement and water which should have the consistency of cream when mixed to a slurry. Begin applying the mixture with a stiff brush at the bottom of the wall moving up in a right to left direction.

The edges should be feathered until the whole area is covered then leave to dry overnight or as long as the mixture takes to become solid. Once the wall has dried, wet the wall down thoroughly again and, in the same manner as the first coat was applied, apply a second coat of the waterproofing mixture. Two coats are necessary as as one coat will not do the job and you may have to start over again. It is not as difficult as it might first appear to waterproof basement walls by putting this information to use.
